ActionScript is not such much of a deal. If you know some programming or better - JavaScript, it will be easy to understand AS.. Actionscript is primarily used for the development of websites and software targeting the Adobe Flash Player platform, used on websites in the form of embedded SWF files. The language itself is open-source in that its specification is offered free of charge and both an open source compiler (as part of Adobe Flex) and open source virtual machine (Mozilla Tamarin) are available.

Initially designed for controlling 2D animations and offering limited script capability and few interactivity features. Subsequent versions added functionality allowing for the creation of Web-based games and rich Internet applications with streaming media (such as video and audio). As we speak, ActionScript already used in basic robotics like the Make Controller kit and in some database applications.

Things have turned to better and the new version of Actionscript (AS3) is way much faster than ActionScript 2, like 10 times and good performance also. It's so much better when you can build much faster in a shorter period of time. There is a new API which makes Actionscript 3.0 more powerful as it has contains hundreds of new API's e.g the drawing API. The Actionscript code is now more extendable and modular which makes it easier to cide. Now it's easier to program since the actionscript code is extendable and more modular. Actionscript 3.0 is less buggy and more enjoyable to work with. Your projects will not be as slow as in AS2 with AS3 because many bugs have been eradicated. Some few bugs still exist, but they can be ignored at the moment.

I know some programming and I always thought AS isn't that hard to understand. I would definitely put a good tutorial to good use if it goes step by step through all the ins and outs of ActionScript.
